“SERVICE- The high road to service is travelled with integrity, compassion andunderstanding. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much youcare.”

“Spring Wellness”versus “Spring Vaccines” — What’s the difference?

The difference lies in the quality of service provided by theveterinarian.A “Spring Wellness”visit includes a physical exam, an oral exam, seasonal counseling andconsultation, and nutritional consultation. It includes a candid discussionabout you and your horse. It is about the veterinarian taking the time tocatch-up on all aspects of your horse’s well-being and to talk to you about yourconcerns (or talk through your barn manager to you). This is very important, and necessary,in order for your veterinarian to deliver the best care at the time of thevisit, and going forward.

At TEVA, we have very thoughtfully and deliberately balancedaffordability and quality care.“Spring Vaccines”, which some other veterinarians are selling, areoffered at lower prices. But the appointment may lack a thorough exam, have notemperature taken, no heart rate recorded, and most likely lacks the client-vetinteraction that you expect.

It was a recent client testimonial which prompted this letter; and wewanted to share the original feedback:

“I have been in the horse industry for 15 years; and I have seen a fewveterinarians. RecentlyTEVAhas opened my eyes to true excellence with their integrity, professionalism andclient/patientcare. I speak first-hand to the genuine nature of this vetpractice. Dr Joyce and Tech Gail are thepeople behind it. They put you andyour horse above all – and their interest is genuine. Interesting, youwould never know that they had several other appointments in the day– becausewhen theyare with you, they want you to believe that they have no otherclients. They are not rushed andexplain well. It is just you and yourappointment.

I was offered a “no farm call fee carrot” a couple years ago and I jumpedon it. It seemed like agood deal. Andthat is all I got. I took unpaid time off from work. My goal was to speak to thevetabout my horse and getting ready for spring training. When I started toask questions, I felt shutdown and rushed. It was suggested that I callthe office for an appointment. As a matter of fact, theyused my personalcheck to fill in my name on their invoice.

So I guess I got what I paid for – spring vaccines and not a minute more.I learned the hard way thatthere is a difference between “spring vaccines” and “springwellness”.PS- And they didn’twaivethe farmcall fee in the fall.”– S.B.February 25, 2013

AtTEVA, we are committed to you and your horse. We will give you our best serviceat a fair price.

As we embark upon our third year, we wanted to tell you some interesting news.

We are proud to have been both nominated, and selected as a Finalist, in this year’s Loudoun County Small Business Awards. We were selected as 1 of 5 Finalists out of around 350 small business nominees. This is a tremendous accolade! Although we did not win the award Friday night, we truly believe we were blessed and are absolutely thankful for such a supportive and engaging clientele. TEVA is proud to have reached this incredible milestone in the short 2 years being in business. Our commitment to excellence in horse care AND customer service will continue to be our focus in the years ahead. As you know, we would not have made it to the finals without your incredible support, voting, and continued confidence in our abilities. Thank you!

On Tuesday 11/13 we received our new ultrasound machine. This isn’t just any ultrasound machine…it is nearly the best, and surely the best on the road. Why is this important? We can now offer referral level imaging, on-site, for less cost and less hassle. This unit is geared toward lameness issues like scanning tendons and ligaments. It will greatly complement our recently upgraded digital radiology system. We strive to stay ahead of imaging technology and to provide your horse with advanced services on the farm. Our ability to diagnose and treat lameness will improve with this upgraded technology.

Online Wellness Program. We are about to make history and revolutionize preventative horse care. Before 2013, we will launch an online service wherein you can select annual preventive and soundness services at a bundled discount. Imagine that you can select various routine veterinary services throughout the year, place them in an online shopping cart, check out, and receive your services in a predictable, individual, highly-tailored manner to suit your horse’s specific needs. This will not only encompass spring and fall wellness visits but it will also focus on other preventative services like dentistry, parasite management, farrier-vet relationship, lameness prevention programs, and others. We are very excited to bring this online option to you, and we hope you will be as well. Customized horse care at your convenience at a discount– what a concept! We will announce its launch later in the year and it will replace the Wellness memberships that we currently offer.

            Other admin:

A change to our credit card policy. If a payment plan is not established within 30 days of your visit, the credit card on file will be charged at 30 days past due. We appreciate that 90% of you either pay or authorize payment within days of our visit. We understand things happen but in order to keep our business viable in providing the best services for our clients we need to keep our receivables to a minimum.

We have begun our search for another veterinarian. We hope to fill this position by the Spring of 2013.

Our mission remains the same: “Total Equine Veterinary Associates was conceived to provide the very best healthcare and service to our equine patients and their owners, and to take equine medicine to the next level. We understand that your horse has a unique set of needs that demands tailored medical care and advice. Total Equine distinguishes itself as a veterinary practice committed to providing the customized service that meet s your needs. We aim to promote long-term relationships with our clients and patients through our excellent service and care. Integrity, professionalism and excellent client communications are of paramount importance in achieving this goal.

Everything in a horse’s environment is important to us. Everything from the feed, to the horse’s daily routines, to the riding discipline and general environmental condition are taken into consideration when providing care for your horse. This is the “Total” concept behind Total Equine.”

Again, we are committed to you and your horse. Thank you.

Paula Joyce and Dr. Jay of Total Equine Veterinary Associates had the opportunity to attend an Advanced Hindend Lameness Seminar and Business Education Conference in Oklahoma City.

Dr Jay attended the Lameness Seminars; and Paula attended the Business Conference.

Here is a re-cap and what they summarized:

HE SAID: We need to evaluate all patients on the hard AND soft surface, from the front and side, and on asphalt when possible.

SHE SAID: Provide more bundled services yet flexible services to meet customer needs.

HE SAID: Evaluate at less than 10m circles.

SHE SAID: Use more social media.

HE SAID: It is hard for the human eye to detect less than 25% asymmetry.

SHE SAID: Takes lots of pictures.

HE SAID: Saddle slip is significant. It slips to the side of the lameness.

SHE SAID: Take more than a lot of pictures.

HE SAID: Sacro-iliac disease is over-diagnosed. But likely secondary to hind lameness.

SHE SAID: More “at-the-time-of-service” payments – sorry folks!

HE SAID: We need to do more nerve blocks. Isolate the pain and don’t presume.

SHE SAID: New clients really like welcome packages.

HE SAID: It is now acceptable to block and treat the same joint, in the same visit.

SHE SAID: Change our client feedback survey.

HE SAID: There is huge value in shockwave therapy within 1 week of competition.

SHE SAID: Create sedation cards to hang on the stall door for after horses are tranquilized.

HE SAID: Toe drag is rarely eliminated even with successful treatment.

SHE SAID: Have I mentioned use more social media?

HE SAID: Drifting at jumps and swinging rear end outward is a hind end lameness.

SHE SAID: JOKE “Some horses are so polite that when they come to a fence, they stop and let you go over first.”

HE SAID: Polyglycan in joint injections should be considered.

Dr. James “Jay” Joyce loaded his dart gun and fired, sending a dart into the zebra’s rump. But the beast still stood, even after another dart stuck into his skin.

Joyce, owner of Total Equine Veterinary Services in Leesburg and a nine-year U.S. Navy vet, had the unique opportunity on Nov. 28 of chasing down a pair of zebras that had escaped from the Leesburg Animal Park.

This wasn’t altogether unfamiliar territory for Joyce. He spent three months at Kruger National Park in Africa, dangling out of helicopters while wielding a dart rifle. In that job, Joyce was working as part of a buffalo tuberculosis study and the team routinely had to drop buffalos via tranquilization for study.

In Africa, wild exotic game is the norm. In Leesburg, not so much.

Seeing stripes

Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said that the zebras had escaped the animal park around noon.

Soon after, Joyce and his team was contacted by the Leesburg Animal Park, and he was headed to the scene.

“We just drove out there, and the Sheriff’s Office was already there, and Animal Control was already there, and half a dozen other people and the zebras just standing,” Joyce said. “We kind of walked up to them and they just bolted.”

Joyce said that zebras have a comfort zone that’s “pretty big,” and started to devise a plan to drive the animals back towards the park.

“We had hoped they would get familiar and just run back in,” Joyce said. “But that’s not what they wanted to do.”

What happened next became a wild goose chase, as the zebras scampered through neighborhoods, easily navigating around homes without fences.

At one point, someone suggested to Joyce that they might have to shoot the zebras to stymy a growing public safety threat as emptying schools and rush hour loomed.

“We saw little kids, and soccer moms, people taking cell phone pictures and everyone peeking out their front door as the zebras ran across,” Joyce laughed.

“There goes a zebra, and there goes a zebra, and there goes a guy chasing him with a dart gun, and there goes his technician, and there goes Animal Control and there goes a bunch of cop cars.”

Eventually, they were able to chase the zebras to a more secure location, away from roads and with some fences blocking off escape routes.

What happened next was straight out of an old video game as a chain of people, including Animal Control staff, employees of Leesburg Animal Park, Sheriff’s deputies and curious neighborhood bystanders, moved inch-by-inch to cut off sections of the grass, containing the zebras in a grid.

“All the people wound up helping, it ended up being really cool,” Joyce said.

Back to the zoo

Once the zebras were contained to a basic area, Joyce was able to load up a dart and fire tranquilizer syringes into the zebras to slow them down. As the chain of people continued to move closer, the group was able to herd the animals onto a trailer, to be safely returned to Leesburg Animal Park.

“Once we had them onboard, everybody broke into a cheer,” Joyce said. “There was a lot of high-fiving and fist-pumping going on.”

Joyce knew he was the right man for the job as soon as he got the call.

“Who else could they have called that could show up in a short time, who had game capture experience, who had a dart gun and who has the leadership ability to move all those people the right way,” Joyce said.

Sometimes animals escape, as Loudoun County was reminded last April when a serval – which resembles a small cheetah – named Nairobi escaped from Leesburg Animal Park and was eventually hit by a car. The animal was later recovered.

Despite all the excitement in Leesburg, this story had a happy ending – for Joyce, the zebras and Leesburg Animal Park.

Joyce is keeping his phone on in the future.

“For sure, I think I will receive similar calls, absolutely,” he said. “From Leesburg Animal Park and Animal Control.”

For now, though, it’s back to those equines without stripes.

We are very excited to finally share with you that our very own Dr. Jay Joyce and the TEVA staff had the opportunity to work with Cavalia’s 71 horses while they boarded at a local facility enroute their USA premier in Atlanta.

For the last 3 weeks, Dr Jay attended to their varied veterinary needs. The most formidable challenge was squeezing in 71 dental floats in 2 weeks while meeting the demands of regular TEVA patients.

“I had a great time working with the staff of Cavalia (Odysseo) and their incredible horses. The Cavalia Team is extraordinary. Everything they do is impressive– times 71. Their grooms, their trainers, their vet techs, their leaders– they all are 100% horsemen with 100% dedication to the health and welfare of their horses,” said Dr. Jay early in their visit. “And although the Cavalia Show is not staying in the area, we look forward to a lasting relationship and their return.” Cavalia demands the very best from their staff and their horses, and TEVA was able to deliver outstanding veterinary and dental care to a unique team of high-level performers. TEVA is proud to have been chosen to deliver this service.

These magnificent horses are truly one of a kind, check Cavalia (Odysseo) at http://www.cavalia.net/en/.

Although an exhausted Dr. Jay is ready to relax now that the 71 dental floats are done, their departure is bittersweet. “It went well and TEVA established a good rapport with Cavalia, but I am sore. Maybe we will meet up at various USA locations between shows to attend to routine veterinary needs.”

“This was a very demanding time for Dr. Jay as he worked with the 71 horses yet kept up with his regular appointments and his emergency on-call. We survived the grueling schedule and it is back to ‘business as usual’ but I must say that although Dr. Jay is a little tired, the entire experience has been wonderful and we’ve truly enjoyed working with the Cavalia horses and staff,” says wife Paula Joyce. “We thank the Cavalia staff for the opportunity to work with their horses and we thank our clients for their patience these last two weeks. And I thank my husband, Dr. Jay, for his dedication to our beloved horses.”
