The Wait is Over! Dr. Coppelman has arrived at Total Equine!

I am super excited to bring Dr. Elizabeth Coppelman to Total Equine Veterinary Associates. She's a great catch! In an ongoing effort to bring the highest quality care to your farm, we recruited another specialist. Dr. Coppelman (or "Dr. E" to her clients) is a surgeon and brings us many years of both practical lameness and equine veterinary experience. She recently completed her contract as a Clinical Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Veterinary Medicine and decided to come home to family and friends in Northern Virginia, and TEVA. She is a local and grew up riding in this area.

Advanced lameness, emergency, dentistry, and routine care are all service areas that Dr. E will provide to TEVA patients. And coming from a university, she loves teaching and explaining procedures as well as answering lots of questions.

While we don't envision building a proper hospital in our near future, Dr. E can bridge the referral gap of services that can be safely and efficiently performed on the farm. Here is a short list of surgical services that she brings to TEVA:

• Cutting ligaments for laminitis or upright hooves
• Helping with crooked baby legs
• Neurectomy for navicular disease or pain in the heel
• Cryptorchids
• Eye removals
• Extensive wound repair

Dr. E will be riding around with Dr. Hyman and I over the next several weeks. We are excited to introduce you to her during our routine visits and indoctrinate D.r E to TEVA's unique style and high level of service.

Elizabeth is a natural. She is a great horseman, a thoughtful and courteous veterinarian, easy-going, and I wouldn't bring anyone into TEVA that didn't already personify those characteristics that make TEVA what it is today.

She a great fit for all of us, and we will all continue to serve you and your horses with the greatest attention and enthusiasm.

A Bit More about Dr. Elizabeth Coppelman

Dr. Elizabeth Coppelman has been practicing equine surgery and medicine since 2013. She grew up in Alexandria, Virginia and competed in the Northern Virginia hunter/jumper circuits. Dr. Coppelman attended the University of Florida and obtained a degree in Animal Sciences, with emphasis in biology. She achieved her doctorate in veterinary medicine at The Ohio State University in 2013. Dr. Coppelman then completed a rotating internship at Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center in Los Olivos, California in 2014. After her internship, Dr. Coppelman went to the University of Minnesota for a duel large animal surgery residency and Master's Degree program. Her research focused on osteoarthritis of the hock in older horses. Dr. Coppelman stayed at UMN as a clinical instructor in large animal surgery and sports medicine this past year. In addition to her western medical training, Dr. Coppelman is certified in equine acupuncture, and has completed both the basic and advanced courses at the Chi Institute. In her spare time (which as been sparse), Dr. Coppelman enjoys riding her horse, Simon, and spending time outdoors with her three dogs - Brewski, Lily, and Griffon. After 12 years, Dr. Coppelman could not be more excited to come back home to Northern Virginia and join the TEVA team. She looks forward to using her advanced Western and Eastern medicine training to provide the TEVA clients with the best possible multimodal and individualized care.
